Conjunto Media Luna was founded in 2020 by musician and producer Iván Medellín, inspired by Colombian accordion cumbia and evolving sounds from Bogotá, Monterrey, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, and California. Initially exploring a traditional quartet, Iván transitioned into a solo project blending electronics and accordion. Nowadays he is presenting "S.I.K. (Sociedad Internacional de la Kumbia)", an album fusing electronic sounds and raw accordion, closing a cycle of heavy beats and dark atmospheres with collaborations from artists central to his journey such as Amantes del Futuro, Turbo Sonidero and Mismo Perro. Back in 2021, he released his first 7'' vinyl through Japan's Okra-Jirushi, and contributed to "Paz en la tierra" with Meridian Brothers via Bongo Joe. His debut album, "Noches de Media Luna" (2022), produced by Eblis Alvarez (Meridian Brothers). Conjunto Media Luna toured Mexico, UK, US and Europe in 2023, 2024, 2025 touring festivals, venues and radios such as Fusion Festival, Garbicz Festival, Alice in Copenhagen, Kumbiavik in Iceland and Dublab in Los Angeles.

SOUND ART

Radio Sur Global

Radio Sur Global is a sound and radio artwork by Colombian producer Ivan Medellin, created at WORM Sound Studio in Rotterdam using an extensive collection of analog instruments and synthesizers, encompassing sound technology that ranges between 1950 and 2025. The piece unfolds as a series of interconnected compositions that merge electronic improvisation, sonic collage, and conceptual radio fiction. Across ten tracks, Medellín explores the technical, emotional, and political layers of radio as both medium and metaphor. Using modular synthesizers, DIY circuitry, and early optical sampling instruments like the Optigan, he reconstructs the ghosts of obsolete technologies to question how communication, data, and memory circulate in the post-digital era. From the ironic pseudo-soundscape Radio Sur Global (Colonial Cut) (a deconstruction of exoticism embedded in sound archives from the global north) to the hypnotic pulse of Last Day of Radio and the reflective interludes Onda and Pulso, the work traces the transformation of radio from an ethereal transmission medium to a disembodied digital concept. The closing piece, Epílogo: Muerte Digital, meditates on the disappearance of analog frequencies and the illusion of eternity in the digital realm. Meedellin’s work, which also extends through his project Conjunto Media Luna, investigates sound as a political and poetic tool, bridging experimental electronics with Latin American sonic imaginaries inside the Cumbia universe.

The Clan of The Rotte River

This cinematic and musical project was created by Stephanie Ascanio G. (director) and Iván Medellín (composer and music producer) in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, during May and June 2023, and later developed in Bogotá, Colombia. It builds on Stephanie’s previous experience in visual creation for artists and projects within Bogotá’s cumbia, jazz, and avant-garde scenes, where she explored the relationship between visual experimentation and live sound performances. This work led them to an artist residency at WORM, a cutting-edge cultural space in Rotterdam. During the residency, they developed a cinematic project accompanied by original music composed in WORM’s music studio, utilizing analog, modular, and granular synthesizers, as well as optical instruments. The project, titled The Clan of the Rotte River, examines Rotterdam’s relationship with the dynamics of developed cities, focusing on how global cultural homogenization interacts with local traditions and immigrant communities that have lived in the city for decades. Through five short films, it addresses themes such as rhythm, forms, change, identity, and diversity, reflecting on the coexistence of global influences and cultural resistances that persist in the city’s daily life. The project’s visual proposal incorporates elements of experimental cinema, such as high-contrast black-and-white imagery, photographic noise, and layered visuals. Its musical approach draws inspiration from genres like ambient, post-rock/punk, free improvisation, sampling, and contemporary electronic techniques. In addition, Stephanie developed a photographic essay to complement the clips, exploring social Interactions, architecture, and memory in Rotterdam. These images highlight the coexistence of vibrant cultural traditions alongside modernization patterns, offering a visual counterpoint that documents how immigrant and local communities contribute to the city’s cultural fabric. The Clan of the Rotte River serves as a testament to Rotterdam in 2023, functioning as a cultural archive that invites reflection on the tensions and synergies between globalization and local identities. It connects the dynamics of this city with those of other urban centers around the world.
